Escaping the Desk and a Slow Wander North Along the Stratford Upon Avon Canal Towpath

Today I decide to take a slow wander northwards on the Stratford Upon Avon Canal Towpath. I decide to head in the direction of King’s Norton and the point where the Stratford Upon Avon Canal joins the Worcester and Birmingham Canal. I don’t go that far though. I decide to walk from Bridge 8 at the Drawbridge Inn to Bridge 7, where I can leave the Towpath and loop back home on the roads via our local Deli and the Sainsbury’s Local. I like to wander the Towpath at lunchtimes because it runs very close to my house and it…

Time in the Garden

Today I spend some time in the garden digging out borders, sawing wood, laying plastic sheeting to prevent weeds, moving heavy slabs, lugging sacks of gravel, and relocating pots. There’s something wonderful about spending time in the garden. It’s good for the body and the mind. Bridge 8 is a small lift bridge that carries the road over the canal and is raised and lowered when a narrow boat passes through. I have just spent the last two hours meeting an old work friend for lunch.…

Ulcerative Colitis and My First Infliximab Infusion

I am sitting in one of several plush blue armchairs, in Solihull Hospital’s infusion unit, waiting for my first Infliximab infusion to begin. Ten years ago I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, and over the last seven months or so I’ve been suffering with a pretty intense flare-up. It turns out the medication I have been on throughout that decade (mesalazine) is no longer proving effective and they have escalated me to immunosuppressant drugs to try and control it. This is the next level of treatment and is a pretty big deal given the risks associated with it. I am…
